Typical Data

Description

CD4 (cluster of differentiation 4), also known as T4/Leu-3, is a 55 kDa glycoprotein. It is a member of the Ig superfamily, primarily expressed on T helper cells, monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells and some thymocytes (CD4+CD8+ and CD4+CD8 thymocytes). CD4 acts as a coreceptor with the TCR during T cell activation and thymic differentiation by binding MHC class II and associating with the protein tyrosine kinase, lck. HIV-1 gp120 protein binds CD4 to enter host T-cells, allowing HIV-1 to bind a co-receptor CCR5 or CXCR4 and fuse the outer membrane of the virus with the host cell membrane.
