N-Terminal pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide is a biomarker derived from the cleavage of proBNP, which is produced and secreted primarily by cardiomyocytes in response to increased wall stress due to volume overload or elevated intracardiac pressure. It is predominantly expressed in the heart, particularly the ventricles. NT-proBNP is widely used in the clinical assessment of heart failure, as its levels correlate with cardiac dysfunction and can help guide diagnosis and treatment. Unlike B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), NT-proBNP has a longer half-life, making it a more stable marker for evaluating cardiac function.
