| Preparation | The immunogen was Karenia brevis toxin (PbTx-1). This antibody was produced from a hybridoma resulting from the fusion of a mouse myeloma with B cells obtained from a mouse immunized with the immunogen. The IgM fraction of tissue culture supernatant was purified using a thiophilic medium with 2-mercaptopyridine. The IgG fraction of tissue culture supernatant was purified using Protein G/A affinity chromatography. |

Breve toxins are known to bind to site 5 of voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells, leading to channel activation. This leads to disruption of normal neurological processes and causes the illness clinically described as neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP). PbTx-1 contains a brevetoxin A backbone.
