Description
S100 calcium binding protein B or S100B is a protein of the S-100 protein family. S100 proteins arelocalized in the cytoplasm and nucleus of a wide range of cells, and involved in the regulation of anumber of cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. S100 genes include atleast 13 members which are located as a cluster on chromosome 1q21; however, this gene is located at21q22.3. This protein may function in neurite extension, proliferation of melanoma cells, stimulation of Ca2+ fluxes, inhibition of PKC-mediated phosphorylation, astrocytosis and axonal proliferation, andinhibition of microtubule assembly. In the developing CNS it acts as a neurotrophic factor and neuronalsurvival protein. In the adult organism it is usually elevated due to nervous system damage, whichmakes it a potential clinical marker. Chromosomal rearrangements and altered expression of this genehave been implicated in several neurological, neoplastic, and other types of diseases, includingAlzheimer's disease, Down's syndrome, epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, melanoma, and type Idiabetes.
Storage / Stability
The antibody is stable for at least 1 year from the date of receipt when stored at -20°C to -70°C. Reconstituted antibody can also be aliquotted and stored at 4°C for 1 month or at -20°C to -70°C in a manual defrost freezer for many months without detectable loss activity. Please avoid freeze-thaw cycles.
Specificity
The antibody can specifically bind to its immunogen, and did not show any cross reactivity with unrelated antigens in ELISA. The specificity for binding to recombinant protein, cellular protein and native antigen is not defined. The Mouse anti-human S100B antibody binds to targets derived from human recombinant protein at various concentrations. Cross reactivity with mouse and rat was not tested.
