Adiponutrin, designated as ADPN is a 53 kDa member of the PNPLA family of phospholipase A2 enzymes. It also is called as PNPLA3, patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3. ADPN is expressed in white adipocytes. Very importantly, it is a predominantly liver-expressed transmembrane protein with phospholipase activity that is regulated by fasting and feeding. Recent genome-wide association studies identified PNPLA3 to be associated with hepatic fat content and liver function, thus pointing to a possible involvement in the hepatic lipoprotein metabolism. Investigation also demonstrated that adiponutrin could be involved in vesicular targeting and protein transport restricted to the adipocyte function.
